Infection prevention can save thousands

Every year, many lives are lost because of the spread of infection in healthcare set-ups. Hospitals and health service providers find it particularly challenging to manage infection control, as they serve patients or clients who may be infected with highly resistant strains.
The goals and objectives of infection prevention (IP) are to keep the client and the environment safe through a series of procedures that decreases the chance of infection. Healthcare workers can take simple steps to prevent the spread of infectious diseases including actions such as covering the face when coughing or sneezing, using gloves, masks and protective clothing, making tissues and hand wipes available, staying up to date with immunisation and strictly following infection prevention guidelines when dealing with blood or contaminated items.
In recognition of its contribution to infection prevention, Marie Stopes Society, (MSS) Pakistan won the ‘Excellence Award in Infection Prevention 2008’ at a ceremony held on Monday, January 19, 2009. Dr Kate Worsley, Head of the Medical Development Team (MDT) of Marie Stopes International (MSI), United Kingdom conferred the award on Mr Siddiq Kiyani, Operations Director, MSS.
Dr Worsley said the award was granted after a rigorous assessment process that involved peer reviews of infection prevention standards using the MDT Quality Technical Assistance (QTA) checklist and after a technical audit conducted by Jill Michelson, Operations Director and Jeanene Aldridge, Centre In charge experts from Australia.
“The IP award has been achieved due to the strict vigilance of the MSS team, high standards of service quality and its strict adherence to Infection Prevention protocols as set by MSI,” she added.
Dr Mohsina Bilgrami, Managing Director, MSS addressed the gathering and said, “The Marie Stopes Society is a social enterprise providing reproductive health services with a development perspective. Beginning with one centre in 1992, today MSS has expanded to more than 75 information and service delivery centres across the four provinces of Pakistan. Through these services, MSS has helped help alleviate the root cause of many socio-economic problems in Pakistan besides supporting the cause of having children by choice and not by chance”.
Marie Stopes Society provides comprehensive reproductive health information and services that include mother and child health and family planning services, and referrals of complicated and specialised care cases. MSS emphasises the provision of information, counselling and comprehensive family planning services for both genders, treatment of septic and incomplete abortions, post-abortion care, safe motherhood services, child immunisation and nutrition care, treatment of reproductive tract infections, sexually transmitted infections and referrals for other related issues.
In the context of health education and awareness, MSS has launched a bilingual interactive website www.srhmatters.org for creating awareness about the sexual and reproductive health matters amongst the youth and adult population. A 24/7 Toll Free Helpline (0800-22333) is also established to provide online confidential, professional and reliable advice by doctor and psychologist.
